Northern Ireland & Golf

Northern Ireland has many golf courses, in fact over 100! It can boast two of the world’s premier links, and has a strong association with one of the world’s best golfers, the very talented Rory McIlroy. Access to these fantastic courses is easy. Fly into Belfast or Aldergrove, hire yourself a car and you could be teeing off within half an hour. All courses are with 90-120 minutes drive of each other and Northern Ireland has good roads and better drivers!

The most notable courses are Portstewart, host of the 2017 Irish Open (pictured); Royal Portrush, host of the 2019 and the 2025 British Open, and Royal County Down. Then there is also Royal Belfast, Ardglass and Holywood.

Ardglass, a short drive from Royal County Down, should be on any golfers to play list. It’s a cliff top course with stunning coastal holes and a friendly gothic style clubhouse, it’s also great to play. The same could be said of Royal Belfast, although for different reasons. Royal Belfast is the oldest members’ club in Ireland and is believed to be where the game had its origins in Ireland. Holywood, which is just outside Belfast is Rory McIlroy’s home course and also superb to play. Well it must be!
